We first meet a client when we first contact them. One of our first questions is “How did you find us?” and “How many other builders are you going to be speaking with as part of the selection process?”
People should speak to only three builders if they are interested in testing the market and getting a feel for the pricing. This is the same as if you were to sell your home.
Here are my top 5 tips…
Tip 1
If possible, work with a recommended renovation builder. You will get a first-hand account of the entire process and whether or not the company delivered. It should be enjoyable if you spend more than $100,000 on renovations. This is unfortunately not always true.
Tip 2
Ask about the addresses, numbers, and names of any projects currently in construction or just completed. Talking to someone who worked with the company many years ago is not a good idea. Anything could have changed or happened in the interim. This should be a red flag if a company refuses to give this information.
Tip 3
Choose a builder who either uses a variety of trades full-time or works with a small number of subcontractors. Ask one or two subcontractors for their opinions about the company.
Tip 4
Look for a builder that has the directors/owners involved in every aspect of the project. It will be easier, more pleasant, and more fun to deal with people who own the company than employees on the site or commission-based salespeople.
Tip 5
Do not let price be the deciding factor when choosing a builder. Reputable and experienced renovation builders sydney should be able to offer prices that are only a few thousand dollars. Not tens of thousands. A quote that is significantly higher or lower than the average price from several builders should be considered a red flag. Depending on how large your project is, the builder you choose will be an integral part of your daily life for six to twelve months.
The builder doesn’t have to be your best friend.
But you need to establish and maintain good working relationships with the company’s team. You should have a good gut reaction when choosing a renovation builder.
