AN EYE-CATCHING home in Wonthaggi designed around the core concept of sustainable living was recently honoured at the 2014 Building Designer’s Association of Victoria (BDAV) Building Design Awards at a gala ceremony at the National Gallery on 26th July.
Developed by the Wonthaggi-based firm Beaumont Concepts and built by Ecoliv Buildings, the innovative prefabricated home, dubbed the ‘Eco Balanced 1, won an award in the category Best Residential Design up to $300K Construction Cost.
Principal designer of the home, Ashley Beaumont, is particularly proud of the environmentally-friendly side of the project and believes the Eco Balanced Display demonstrates that “you don’t have to spend a lot of money to build something that’s environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.”
“We’ve got a lot of features and products in the house that are sourced locally and perform well environmentally,” Ashley explained.
Priorities in the brief were simplicity, affordability and low maintenance finishes both inside and out: as well as a low environmental impact in both the construction phase, and the lifecycle of the home.
The planning of this compact home consists of two simple volumes which are carefully juxtaposed to provide functional space within an economical footprint for construction. A sheltered deck to the west of the living area contributes to the functionality of the home in many ways: it extends the available living area to the outside, while providing protection from the elements.
External walls are clad with lightweight cladding, contrasted with radially sawn silver top ash battens. This creates visual interest without breaking the budget. Internal spaces are simple and uncluttered, and materials have been carefully chosen to create a spacious feel without compromising on quality.
Ashley re-iterated Beaumont Concepts dedication to designing homes that provide value for money, sustainability and are visually appealing.
Ashley confirmed that Beaumont Designs have a number of similar projects underway in the South Gippsland region and will continue with projects that are “designed with the same environmentally-friendly principals.”
